PLEASE NOTE: The information in this web site is not intended as a substitute for medical or mental health care advice.
Choose to stay in control
- Decide what you want and don't want from drinking/ use
- Experience the magic of being assertive knowing what you do/don't want
- Learn to say NO Thanks - Many UM students (report) respect(ing) that!
- Don't give in to peer pressure - after a while they stop or can't pay attention anyway
- If you decide to drink, drink mindfully, actually enjoying the company and occasion
- Never drink on empty stomach
- Avoid binge and daily drinking
- Have a plan for drinking events, take control, decide to set a goal
- Consider writing down reasons for cutting down and/or stopping
- Avoid drinking (and using) situations or at least arrive later and with a plan - including avoiding drinking games, liquor, carbonation, pre-gaming and chugging. Leave earlier and in control.
- Don't mix Alcohol w/ other drugs including mixing with medications - other depressants (i.e. Valium) and/or stimulants (i.e. Adderall Ritalin, Red Bull)
